Medical coding and billing continue to be popular careers because they pay well and do not require an advanced college degree. Yet they still require training and certification. Training options include both online and in-person courses. Future coders and billers even have access to free courses.
Free medical billing and coding courses are offered by legitimate training companies and scammers alike. The trick is figuring out who is offering what. The best advice we could offer is that you vet any free training course you are thinking of signing up for. Any course that will ostensibly prepare you for a medical coding or billing career without costing you a dime is suspect.
With that in mind, here are some key things to know about free courses:
1. They Are Inadequate
A lot goes into learning medical coding and billing. Both careers involve considerably more than just memorizing a few codes and learning how to look up less-used codes online or in a paper catalog. The fact of the matter is that free training courses are inadequate for teaching all there is to learn.
Although certification is not legally required for medical coding and billing careers, most employers these days require it. The other thing to remember about free medical coding and billing courses is that they are not likely to prepare you to sit for a certification exam. You just won't learn everything you'll need to know to pass the exam.
2. They Can Enhance Paid Training
Although free training courses will not adequately prepare you to sit for a certification exam, they can enhance paid training. A free course could be an excellent supplement to a traditional training program through a college or online learning company. If nothing else, free courses normally offer plenty of opportunities to practice coding and billing skills.
Of course, how much a free training program can enhance paid training depends on what it offers. A student needs to decide for him or herself whether a free course is worth taking.
3. An Ulterior Motive Is Sometimes Attached
It is a shame we need to mention this, but the fact is that some free training programs are offered with an ulterior motive. The providers of such courses want an inroad to sell you on paid training. Their free courses are just a steppingstone to getting you to enroll in a traditional program.
Offering something for free in hopes of making a future sale is a common business practice. Training providers should not be faulted for it. Nonetheless, we mention it here just so you understand what you might be getting yourself into. Again, thoroughly vet any free training courses you are considering before signing up.
4. They Are Good for Career Introductions
Despite the many shortcomings of free medical coding and billing courses, they do have one very strong point: they can be amazingly effective at introducing someone to coding and billing careers. This suggests that free courses can be utilized as a recruiting tool. That is not a bad thing, by the way.
Someone thinking of entering medical billing or coding may have a false impression of what the careers are all about. A free training course could make that person more familiar with billing and coding, potentially selling the person on the career or making it clear that another choice is more appropriate.
Free medical coding and billing courses have their place on the table. Hopefully you now understand that place a little bit better. You can decide for yourself how valuable free courses are.
