When billing a medical code instead of the dental code D9223 -Deep sedation/general anesthesia - each 15 minute increment, consider the following medical codes: (Be sure to review the AMA guidelines to see if they fit the procedure you are doing).
If a dental office is doing conscious sedation for a patient under 5 years old, there is a code for each 15 Minute increment and another code if the patient is over 5 years old. There are also add on codes (+) for additional 15 minutes after the initial 30 minutes. In addition, there are codes if sedation is administered by a physician other than the health care professional performing the procedure, (see codes 99151-99157).
99151 Moderate sedation services provided by the same physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports, requiring the presence of an independent trained observer to assist in the monitoring of the patient's level of consciousness and physiological status; initial 15 minutes of intraservice time, patient younger than 5 years of age.
99152 Moderate sedation services provided by the same physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports, requiring the presence of an independent trained observer to assist in the monitoring of the patient's level of consciousness and physiological status; initial 15 minutes of intraservice time, patient age 5 years or older.
(add on code) 99153 Moderate sedation services provided by the same physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports, requiring the presence of an independent trained observer to assist in the monitoring of the patient's level of consciousness and physiological status; each additional 15 minutes intraservice time (List separately in addition to code for primary service).
99155 Moderate sedation services provided by a physician or other qualified health care professional other than the physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports; initial 15 minutes of intraservice time, patient younger than 5 years of age.
99156 Moderate sedation services provided by a physician or other qualified health care professional other than the physician or other qualified health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports; initial 15 minutes of intraservice time, patient age 5 years or older.
