It typically presents either as an enlarging area of macular pigmentation on the palms and soles or as a longitudinal pigmented band within the nail plate. More aggressive tumours present as ulcerated nodules which, when involving the nail apparatus, can destroy the nail plate. Acral lentiginous malignant melanoma accounts for a high proportion of melanomas seen in dark-skinned people.
