description | This study is for the assessment of hip joints for developmental hip dysplasia. This term refers to a developmental condition, (sometimes referred to as congenital) dysplasia, in the hip that includes frank dislocation (luxation), partial dislocation (subluxation), instability where the femoral head comes in and out of the socket, and an array of radiographic abnormalities that reflect inadequate formation of the acetabulum.1 The practice of ultrasonographic imaging of the cartilaginous newborn hip began in the 1980s, and it has been established as an accurate method for imaging the hip and its stability, as the soft tissue structures that are not visible on routine X-Rays can be visualized.1,2,4 Static ultrasound evaluation assesses the hip morphology. Ultrasound can also demonstrate hip instability and can be done as the hip is moved, a dynamic evaluation, which assesses the stability of the femoral head in the socket as the person doing the test is able to see the femoral head moving in and out of the socket. 1,2,3 Ultrasound can also be done to demonstrate improvement in stability. | ||||
