description | Refractive error in children is measured using cycloplegic autorefraction with the Retinomax. Eyes undergo cycloplegia after pupillary dilating eyedrops and eight readings of refractive error of each eye are taken with the Retinomax in the Refractions and Keratometry mode. In instances where cycloplegic autorefraction cannot be obtained on an eye or when it is of poor quality (Retinomax confidence rating <= 7), cycloplegic retinoscopy is performed to obtain a measure of refractive error. This protocol uses Retinomax to measure refractive error in children. Other instruments can be used to measure refractive error. If other instruments are used, the reproducibility of the measurements should be comparable to those acquired with this protocol. In addition, when other instruments are used to collect these measurements, the manufacturer and model of equipment should be recorded. These other devices may require some different steps than are described in this protocol. Investigators should follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions to ensure quality control. | ||
