descriptionElevated levels of D-lactate in stool specimens is seen in patients with D-Lactate acidosis, a unique form of lactic acidosis occurring in patients with intestinal bypass or short bowels. Patients typically present with episodic metabolic acidosis (esp. after high carbohydrate meals) and characteristic neurologic abnormalities, such as confusion, cerebellar ataxia, slurred speech, and loss of memory.
