descriptionBrain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and amino-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP) are significantly elevated in patients with heart failure because tension or stretching of the cardiac wall, such as occurs with heart failure, stimulates the synthesis of natriuretic peptides. Pleural fluid BNP and NT-proBNP is a useful biomarker for pleural effusions secondary to heart failure. A pleural NT-proBNP cutoff value of 1,165 pg/mL had a sensitivity of approximately 95% for discriminating heart failure-related effusions from exudates, and a cutoff of 2,300 pg/mL had a sensitivity of approximately 70% for discriminating heart failure-related transudates from non-heart-failure related pleural effusions. [PMID: 22710710] This term was created for, but is not restricted in use to, the Elecsys proBNP II assay, which contains two monoclonal antibodies that recognize epitopes located in the N-terminal part (1-76) of proBNP (1-108).

Fully-Specified Name

componentNatriuretic peptide.B prohormone N-Terminal
propertyMCnc  =  Mass Concentration
timePt  =  Point in time:  To identify measures at a point in time. This is a synonym for “spot” or “random” as applied to urine measurements.
systemPlr fld  =  Pleural fluid (thoracentesis fld)
scaleQn  =  Quantitative:  The result of the test is a numeric value that relates to a continuous numeric scale. Reported either as an integer, a ratio, a real number, or a range. The test result value may optionally contain a relational operator from the set {<=, <, >, >=}. Valid values for a quantitative test are of the form "7", "-7", "7.4", "-7.4", "7.8912", "0.125", "<10", "<10.15", ">12000", 1-10, 1:256
methodIA  =  Immunoassay:  Encompasses all immunoassays with a few exceptions, including Immune Blot and Immune Fluorescence, which were created based on historic usage.

Associated Observations

LOINC codes that represent optional associated observation(s) for a clinical observation or laboratory test. A LOINC term may represent a single associated observation or panel containing several associated observations.

last change typeMIN  - change to field other than name
change reasonThe EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
