Abbreviated breast magnetic resonance imaging (AB-MRI)

An abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MRI) is performed for cancer screening for women with dense breast tissue. Dense breast tissue makes detecting cancer more difficult via mammography or self-examination. There are some differences between the regular breast MRI and the AB-MRI. Both MRIs involve no radiation as with any MRI and there are no breast compressions. The AB-MRI requires contrast, however less time and limited sequences are needed to perform it as compared to a regular breast MRI. Our facility wants to know how an abbreviated breast MRI is reported? Is CPT code 77049 with modifier -52 the correct way to report it? ...
