Knee arthroplasty procedures
Effective January 1, 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) removed total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures from the Inpatient Only (IPO) List opening up the possibility for these procedures to be performed in a hospital outpatient setting. In addition, effective January 1, 2020, CMS added TKA procedures to the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) covered procedure list. It is important to note that for Medicare beneficiaries a TKA may be performed as an inpatient or outpatient procedure.
