New CPT codes for reporting multirespiratory virus testing that include COVID-19
Effective October 6, 2020, the American Medical Association (AMA) established two new respiratory virus panels that will allow the detection of influenza A, influenza B and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19). The following codes will allow for multiple respiratory virus testing as follows: CPT code 87636 will include the testing of SARS-CoV-2 with influenza A and influenza B and CPT code 87637 will include the testing of SARS-CoV-2 with influenza A, influenza B and RSV.
