Salpingectomy via bipolar electrocautery
A female patient presented for sterilization. In the operating room, the patient was placed in dorsal lithotomy position. A speculum was placed into the vagina and the anterior lip of the cervix was grasped with a single-tooth tenaculum. Attention was then turned to the abdomen where trocars were placed into the peritoneal cavity. The abdomen was insufflated with gas. A grasping forceps was passed through the bilateral ports and used to elevate the bilateral tubes away from each sidewall. Placing the bipolar electrocautery device across the fallopian tube, the device was used to transect serially the fallopian tube from the mesosalpinx. The tube was then transected from the uterus. This was done on both sides. The tubes were removed through the lateral ports. All sites were confirmed hemostatic and the ports were removed. All skin incisions were closed and the vaginal instruments were removed.There seems to be conflicting advice between Coding Clinic for HCPCS First Quarter 2022, page 13, compared to CPT Assistant March 2022, page 12, for laparoscopic salpingectomy for sterilization. Can you please clarify the correct CPT code for the bilateral salpingectomies in this case where the fallopian tubes were fulgurated and transected prior to removal? ...
