Could you please help clarify the correct use of the fifth digits 0 and 1 for the classification of diabetes in ICD-9-CM? When a patient is described by the physician to be NIDDM, Type II, and taking daily insulin, we code the patient as 250.00. The PRO, however, is referring these records and the codes are being changed to 250.01, insulin dependent.
