The Central Office has received a number of questions regarding how to code inadvertent tissue, nodes or gland removal when performing biopsies. The following guidelines have been developed to assist the coder in the appropriate code assignment for these situations: (1) If the intent of the biopsy was to obtain tissue from one organ but the physician inadvertently obtained tissue from an adjacent organ, do not code the incidental biopsy.
