Abnormal Cytology Smear, Cervical and Vaginal

Effective October 1, 2008, codes in subcategory 795.0, Abnormal Papanicolaou smear of cervix and cervical HPV, have been revised to specifically identify the abnormal cells as cervical in nature. A new code (795.07) was created to identify whether any cells are present from the transformation zone, the area where the mucosa become squamous. Preferable, when a sample is taken, it will contain cells from this transitional zone. However, a sample may be considered satisfactory (i.e., a postmenopausal woman may lack endocervical cells present in the transformation zone because of normal physiologic changes), but a code is...
