Effective October 1, 2007, code 284.8, Other specified aplastic anemias, has been expanded to uniquely identify acquired red cell aplasia (284.81) as well as other specified aplastic anemia (284.89) caused by chronic systemic disease, drug therapy, infection, radiation and/or toxins. Acquired pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a specific type of aplastic anemia that affects the precursors to red blood cells in the bone marrow.
