Acute Fracture versus Aftercare
Effective November 15, 2006, chapter-specific guidelines were revised for coding pathological and traumatic fractures, the corresponding E codes and fracture aftercare. Key points to remember when coding pathologic and traumatic fractures are as follows: Newly diagnosed pathologic fractures are reported using subcategory 733.1. See Section I.C. 13.a.1 of the Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines. Subcategory 733.1 is used as long as the patient is receiving active treatment for the fracture.
