Acute Supraglottitis

Supraglottitis refers to inflammation and edema of the epiglottic structures, including the epiglottis, arytenoepiglottic folds, arytenoids and false vocal cords. Supraglottitis is characterized by fever, sore throat, hoarseness, dysphagia and drooling. Edema of the epiglottis may result in obstruction of the airway and death. Supraglottitis primarily affects children 2-7 years of age, but may affect adults as well. The causative organism in most cases of acute supraglottitis is Haemophilus influenzae type B. Other pathogens include Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.
