Anal, Rectal, and Anorectal Fistulas

An anal, rectal, or anorectal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or fistula that connects the surface of the anal canal, perianal skin or perineum, to the skin around the anus. Fistulas are a chronic result of an acute perirectal process that forms an anal abscess. When the abscess incompletely heals, ruptures, or drains, a track can form that connects to the abscess. Codes were created for simple and complex anal, rectal, and anorectal fistulas.
