An anal, rectal, or anorectal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or fistula that connects the surface of the anal canal, perianal skin or perineum, to the skin around the anus. Fistulas are a chronic result of an acute perirectal process that forms an anal abscess. When the abscess incompletely heals, ruptures, or drains, a track can form that connects to the abscess.
