Clarification of Vascular Access Devices vs. Central Venous Catheter
Vascular access device is a rather generic term used to describe sterile catheter systems used to access a vascular structure-either an artery or a vein. Venous access may be subdivided into peripheral and central catheters. Peripheral venous catheters are inserted into superficial veins, generally in the arms, legs, feet, or head. Peripheral venous catheter insertion is usually performed by a nurse at bedside. Central venous catheters are inserted into larger, deeper veins such as the subclavian, jugular, or femoral veins.
