AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-9 - 1997 First Quarter

Correction

In the Third Quarter 1995 issue of Coding Clinic it was stated that "if the physician documents dilantin toxicity with no documented adverse reaction listed, assigned code 796.4, Other abnormal clinical finding." In speaking with several of our physicians, their consensus is that toxicity is not a poisoning, but is asymptomatic and based on blood levels. They felt that code 796.0, Nonspecific abnormal toxicological findings, would be more appropriate than 796.4. The inclusion term under 796.0 is "abnormal levels of heavy metals or drugs in blood, urine, or other tissue." ...
