New codes have been created to identify acute and chronic venous embolism and thrombosis of deep vessels of the distal lower extremities, such as the peroneal vein and calf muscular vein. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), also referred to as venous thromboembolism, is a blood clot in a major vein, generally occurring in the legs or pelvis. Calf vein thrombosis refers to any clot affecting the deep veins of the calf, also known as the distal portion of the lower extremity, without extending into the popliteal vein.
