Effective October 1, 2004, code 277.85, Disorders of fatty acid oxidation, has been created to uniquely identify fatty acid oxidation disorders. Fatty acid oxidation disorders (FODs) are genetic metabolic deficiencies in which the body is unable to break down fatty acids to make energy. Usually glucose is metabolized to provide energy to the body; however, when glucose is not available, the body uses fat. When an enzyme is missing or not working properly, fat cannot be used.
