Dr. Joseph Luther Kelly 1957 - 2010

Dr. Joseph Kelly died in a single-engine airplane crash in Edgewater, Maryland. For the past seven years he worked as a Medical Officer in the Hospital and Ambulatory Policy Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), working primarily on hospital issues. He was a valued member of the CMS staff participating in the AHA Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM Editorial Advisory Board. Dr. Kelly had the outstanding ability to recognize and delineate the challenges of the hospital coder in translating medical documentation into codes.
