Endovascular Removal of Obstruction
Effective October 1, 2006, a new code (39.74) has been created to uniquely identify endovascular mechanical thrombectomy of precerebral and cerebral vessels. Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy is an innovative procedure for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes account for approximately 80% to 90% of all strokes and are caused by obstruction/occlusion from thrombus or embolus in the precerebral and cerebral vessels. Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy can restore patency in the neurovasculature by removing occlusion(s) and may be used for patients who are not eligible for thrombolytic therapy.
