Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome
Eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS), first recognized in 1989, is a chronic disease that predominantly affects the skin, muscle, and nerves with central nervous, cardiac, and pulmonary system complications. Patients experience a variety of signs and symptoms, including diffuse muscle pain (myalgia) and elevated numbers of eosinophils in the blood (eosinophilia). In some cases patients experience severe pulmonary symptoms (i.e., pneumonia), cardiac symptoms (i.e., arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension), and, neurologic symptoms (i.e., ascending polyneuropathy).
