Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
Category K86, Other diseases of the pancreas, has been further expanded to describe other specified diseases of the pancreas, unrelated to acute pancreatitis. Two new codes have been created: K86.81, Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and K86.89, Other specified diseases of pancreas. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) (K86.81) refers to the inability to digest food properly due to a lack of exocrine pancreatic digestive enzymes. Chronic pancreatitis is the most common cause of EPI.
