Fetal Distress

Fetal distress may be defined as signs indicating a critical response to stress. It implies metabolic abnormalities-such as hypoxia and acidosis that affect the functions of vital organs to the point of temporary or permanent injury or death. Prior to October 1, 1998, abnormal fetal heart rate affecting fetus or newborn was classified with fetal distress under codes 768.2 to 768.4.
