Fetal Distress
Fetal distress may be defined as signs indicating a critical response to stress. It implies metabolic abnormalities-such as hypoxia and acidosis that affect the functions of vital organs to the point of temporary or permanent injury or death.
Prior to October 1, 1998, abnormal fetal heart rate affecting fetus or newborn was classified with fetal distress under codes 768.2 to 768.4. Code 763.8, Other specified complications of labor and delivery affecting fetus or newborn, has been expanded to separate heart rate abnormalities from the other more serious fetal stress indicators in category 768.
