Fetal Inflammatory Response Syndrome

New codes have been created to identify newborns affected by fetal inflammatory response syndrome (P02.70); and newborns affected by other conditions from chorioamnionitis (P02.78). Fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS) is an acute systemic inflammatory response to maternal intra-amniotic fluid infection such as chorioamnionitis, amnionitis, membranitis or placentitis. FIRS can occur if the neonate is exposed to chorioamnionitis either through direct contact with infected amniotic fluid or inflammatory cell transfer from the uteroplacental circulation.
