Gastroenteritis due to Chemotherapy
We are requesting clarification regarding the coding of gastroenteritis resulting from chemotherapy. The September-October 1984 issue of Coding Clinic, states that coding for toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs should identify the toxic effects as the principal diagnosis with an E code to identify the drug. An example noted is gastrointestinal effects, such as diarrhea (toxic) or gastroenteritis (ulcerative), 558.2 and E933.1. On the other hand, Coding Clinic, Fifth issue 1994, pages 6-7, states, “when coding drug-induced diarrhea, it is incorrect to assume toxic gastroenteritis.†What is the correct code assignment for gastroenteritis due to chemotherapy? ...
