Gastrointestinal Conditions with Hemorrhage

A continuing problem with sequencing has been whether the gastrointestinal condition or its associated hemorrhage should be listed as the principal diagnosis. Although an attempt has been made to provide advice on this topic, a degree of subjectivity in making the assignment has remained. Effective October 1, 1991, this dilemma has been largely resolved by the addition of certain fifth-digits that indicate whether or not hemorrhage is present. New fifth-digit codes have been provided to make this distinction with the following conditions: Gastritis and duodenitis 535.0-535.6 0 without mention of hemorrhage 1 with hemorrhage Angiodysplasia of stomach...
