Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor

New codes have been created to specifically identify gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). GISTs are the most common soft tissue sarcoma of mesenchymal origin. These tumors are thought to originate from specialized cells (interstitial cells of Cajal, or precursors of them). Although GISTs can start anywhere along the GI tract, more than half start in the stomach and most of the others start in the small intestine.
