When the purpose of a hospital admission is for the treatment of a malignancy by implantation or insertion of radioactive elements, the principal diagnosis is the neoplastic condition (malignancy) being treated with the radioactive element. Most of the diseases treated by radiation therapy are malignancies in the 140-208 code series. One type of radiotherapy is the implantation or insertion of radiation source within a cavity (intracavitary) or directly into tissue (interstitial), 92.27, and it is called brachytherapy (implantation of the source of ionizing radiation close to the treatment area).
