Infection Due to Central Venous Catheter and Transfusion Transmitted Infections

Effective October 1, 2011, new codes have been created to distinguish between local (999.32) and systemic (999.33) infections due to central venous catheter. Previously in ICD-9-CM, these infections were indexed to code 999.31, Infection due to central venous catheter. However, there are two major categories of infections due to central venous catheters: local and systemic. The existing code did not distinguish between central line-associated bloodstream infections, which are systemic, and local infections.
