There are no specific codes which identify immunotherapy for cancer. It is currently being assigned to 99.25, Injection or infusion of cancer chemotherapeutic substance. Effective October 1, 1994, a new code (99.28, Injection or infusion of biological response modifier [BRM] as an antineoplastic agent), has been added to specifically identify immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is also known as biologic therapy and biologic anticancer therapy. Chemotherapy is a treatment which interferes with cell growth and division, while immunotherapy causes the body's own immune system to reject the cancer.
