Intracardiac Echocardiography

Effective October 1, 2001, code 37.28, Intracardiac echocardiography, has been created to uniquely identify this procedure. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) is a diagnostic procedure that provides direct, real-time two-dimensional images and allows physiologic evaluation from inside the heart. Using an introducer sheath, the ICE catheter is inserted into either the femoral vein in the groin or the internal jugular vein in the neck. As the catheter tip is advanced towards the heart, the physician is able to visualize structures along the way.
