Kaposi's Sarcoma

While Kaposi's sarcoma most commonly affects the skin, improved diagnostic capability and the increasing number of patients with AIDS have resulted in diagnoses of Kaposi's sarcoma of other sites; such as the palate, lung, and gastrointestinal tract. The only code provided by ICD-9-CM has been for malignancy of the skin, which has not permitted effective collection of data on the occurrence of this particular neoplasm. Effective October 1, 1991, Kaposi's sarcoma is classified to category 176, rather than category 173, with the site indicated by the fourth digit.
