Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Effective October 1, 2009, new codes have been created to uniquely report Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin. Merkel cell carcinoma (which is sometimes referred to as a neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin) arises from the uncontrolled growth of Merkel cells in the skin. It is a rare skin cancer. Merkel cell carcinoma has the potential to be fatal, and aggressive treatment is warranted. Merkel cell carcinoma does not have a distinguishing appearance.
