Neurogenic Bowel

Neurogenic bowel refers to loss of bowel function due to damage to the nervous system. It results from disruption of normal afferent activity to the bowel, resulting in impaired defecation. Neurogenic bowel is a major sequelae of spinal cord injury. It may also be seen in spina bifida patients. The condition may involve disruption of upper motor neuronal innervation or lower motor innervation. There is an increased likelihood of fecal impaction, and less frequently, adynamic ileus and volvulus with neurogenic bowel.
