Observation for Suspected Injury Following Motor Vehicle Accident
A 12-month-old male was a restrained passenger in an infant car seat, when the vehicle was rear-ended at a stop light, with minimal damage to the vehicle. The following day the primary care physician checked the infant. The baby had not experienced any signs or symptoms such as vomiting or loss of consciousness, and was eating and drinking well. The examination was completely normal with no sign of injury. Would it be appropriate to assign a code from Chapter 20 – External Causes of Morbidity to provide additional detail regarding the cause of possible injury? How should this encounter be coded? ...
