Omphalocele and Gastroschisis

Effective October 1, 2009, new codes have been created under subcategory 756.7, Anomalies of abdominal wall, to identify omphalocele (756.72) and gastroschisis (756.73). Prior to the creation of these two codes, both conditions were indexed and included at code 756.79, Other congenital anomalies of the abdominal wall. This made it difficult to accurately separate these distinct defects. In order to improve better epidemiological tracking of these two separate entities, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) requested that new unique codes be established for each condition.
