The patient is a 59-year-old male who presented to the hospital for treatment of dermatological lesions. He had recently been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and received a regimen of chemotherapy, consisting of doxorubicin (Doxil®), Decadron, and Vincristine. Doxorubicin is an antineoplastic antibiotic. The physician’s final diagnostic statement listed, “hand-foot syndrome, otherwise known as palmar plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE) secondary to doxorubicin.” In ICD-9-CM, under the terms hand-foot syndrome, the index directs to code 282.61, Hb-SS disease without crisis.
