Post-Traumatic Seroma and Nontraumatic Hematoma

Effective October 1, 2008, new codes have been created to describe unspecified disorders of soft tissue (729.90), post-traumatic seroma (729.91), nontraumatic hematoma (729.92) as well as other disorders of soft tissue (729.99). A seroma is a pocket of residual serous fluid that can develop following traumatic injury or surgery. Post-traumatic seromas develop because of swelling caused by an injury. Seroma fluid is typically clear and light-colored and consists of serum rather than red blood cells that make up hematomas. In most cases, seromas are self-limiting and will resolve over time.
