When a 28-day-old newborn is diagnosed with RSV bronchiolitis, would it be appropriate to assign code 771.89, Other infection specific to the perinatal period, in addition to code 466.11, Acute bronchiolitis due to respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]? Some coders believe that this code assignment is inappropriate because of the inclusion note under 771, which seems to imply that this category should be assigned only for infections acquired before or during birth or via the umbilicus, and should be evident or suspected before the time of discharge or transfer.
