Retinopathy of Prematurity
Effective October 1, 2008, new codes have been created to uniquely identify retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ROP is a disorder of the blood vessels of the retina in a premature infant. It is a leading cause of blindness in children. ROP occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow and spread throughout the retina. When a baby is born prematurely, eye development can be disrupted.
