Sequencing of Acute Cholecystitis with Cholelithiasis and Gallstone Pancreatitis
A patient presented to the emergency department (ED) due to a history of upper abdominal pain that was exacerbated after eating fatty foods, along with associated nausea. After preliminary work-up in the ED, including ultrasound of the abdomen, the patient was admitted due to acute cholecystitis with cholelithiasis and gallstone pancreatitis. IV medications were administered for pain and nausea and a laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed. Are cholecystitis and pancreatitis considered interrelated conditions with either condition potentially meeting the definition of principal diagnosis?
