Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli

Effective October 1, 2011, code 041.4, Escherichia coli [E. coli], has been expanded to identify Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. E. coli represent a large and diverse group of bacteria with most strains being harmless. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) may also be called enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). It is a bacterium that can cause illness ranging from mild intestinal disease to severe kidney complications. Gastrointestinal infections due to STEC may lead to potentially fatal conditions such as hemolytic uremic syndrome.
