Smoke Inhalation and Acute Respiratory Failure
In ICD-10-CM, under code J70.5, Respiratory conditions due to smoke inhalation, there is no instructional note indicating “use additional code” to describe acute respiratory failure due to smoke inhalation. The patient is admitted through the emergency department for smoke inhalation with acute respiratory failure. Should acute respiratory failure (J96.0) be assigned as an additional code to specify the type of respiratory condition since the index does not provide direction?
