Testing of Premature Rupture of Membranes via Indigo Carmine Injection

A patient presented at 32 weeks and 1 day for a routine obstetric appointment and was admitted due to suspected premature rupture of membranes. After several days of no leaking and with normal amniotic fluid on ultrasound, a decision was made to assess whether the membranes were intact. Under ultrasound guidance, a 22-gauge spinal needle was placed inside the amniotic cavity; 2 mL of amniotic fluid were removed. At this point, 2 mL of indigo carmine were injected into the amniotic cavity without difficulty. A tampon was placed in the vagina to assess whether or not the membranes were ruptured. The results of the amnio indigo carmine test were negative for premature rupture of membranes.
