Thrombosis and Thrombophlebitis
In the Third Quarter 1991 issue of Coding Clinic you described thrombosis as the formation of a clot in a blood vessel and thrombophlebitis as the inflammation of the lining of a vein, indicating that only the thrombophlebitis should be reported when the physician includes both conditions in the diagnostic statement. What code should be assigned when the physician describes conditions associated with phlebitis (swelling, erythema, pain, and induration) but lists only the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
