Transluminal Angioplasty: Failed Completed versus Incompleted

Note: For further clarification of failed transluminal angioplasty, see Coding Clinic, Third Quarter, 1992. A completed transluminal (balloon) angioplasty that is unsuccessful in maintaining the flow of blood through the artery is often referred to as a "failed completed angioplasty." When the balloon tip has been inflated to widen the narrow (blocked) area, the procedure is coded as a completed transluminal (balloon) angioplasty regardless of whether or not the end result proved successful.
